Why Are Some of My Files Showing an Error?

Last updated: June 17, 2026

In this article: What the Errors tab is, what the different error types mean, and what to do when a file fails to process.

If one or more of your files fails to process, they'll appear under the Errors tab at the top of your case. This is separate from your main document list and gives you a clear view of any files that need attention.

Failed files will not be included in any exports until they've been successfully processed.

Error types

There are five error types you might see:

  • Analysis Failed — Phaselaw was unable to scan the file for personal data

  • Conversion Failed — An excel file could not be converted into a review-ready PDF

  • Finalization Failed — something went wrong while finalizing the document

  • Unknown Failure — an unexpected error occurred

  • Waiting for Document — the file needs to be re-uploaded

  • Password Required — the file is password-protected and needs a password to be processed → How to Handle Password-Protected Files

What to do

1. Attempt an automated repair

For Analysis Failed, Finalization Failed, and Unknown Failure errors, click the repair icon next to the file in the Errors tab. Phaselaw will attempt to fix and reprocess it automatically.

Note: Attempting a repair will reset a file, so any redactions, comments or any other actions will be permanently removed.

2. Download the original file and check it opens

If the repair doesn't work, it may be that the file itself is corrupted. Click the download icon next to the file and try opening it outside of Phaselaw. If it won't open on your device, the file is likely corrupted at source and will need to be replaced with a working copy before re-uploading.

3. Contact support

If the file opens correctly outside of Phaselaw but still fails to process, reach out to the support team via the live chat in the bottom right corner of the product or email support@phase.law.
